you can use a paumade [sic] or hair wax if you want to use normal products, otherwise alot of my friends would use elmers glue and egg whites. to get the smaller, individual spikes, you need to grap the little bits of hair and sort of twist them into a spike.

You can use any heavy-duty gel, most people use Got2B Spiked Up, but when I was in school guys would also use elmer's glue. Use a good amount of gel, and just grab small handfuls and carefully pull up. It helps to set it with a hairdryer on a cool setting, warmth will just make the gel melt. Practice makes perfect, so try it out a few times to see what works for you.
