How do you make a military style bun for longer hair?

Hi, I'm about to enlist in the Air Force and I need to know how to put my hair up into a neat bun! I always wear my hair long, down, straight, and layered. It's length is to right under my shoulder blades. I really would rather not cut it for BMT and I don't usually wear my hair up, and when it is - it's messy. So can someone tell me how to style my hair into a bun that will work for regulation, including details on if we are allowed to use hair products (gel, hairspray, pomade, bobby pins, the other small metal hair clips, ect) at Basic. I am aware that there is hardly any time to do anything...so tips on how to do it quick and painless would be great.

I am mixed, hispanic asian with dark, really thick, straight, hair. I also have side swept bangs...they're growing out though but they still add to the layers I have.

Thank you.

just put it in a long pony tail. twist your hair and wrap it around utnil it's all in a bun. use a scrunch or something to hold it together. you can use bobby pins and simple clips as long as they are close to your hair color.

Negative!!!! I am former Navy, and this is how we were taught:

**Use bobby pins, and hair ties in a NATURAL color!!!! Black bobby pins in blonde hair is a NO-NO!!!**

1-Put hair in a secure ponytail in the center of head (for ball caps), or just under where your cover sits on the back of your head. *No flyaways or strays!*

2-Cut the toe out of a dress sock (or a small child's sock depending on the length of your hair or the desired size of the bun), and roll it into itself- Basically untill it looks like a doughnut. Then, place the ponytail through the center and place it firmly against the back of your head.

3- From there, it's the home stretch. Wind your hair tightly over the sock until you reach the ends. The ends can be tucked under the now hair-covered sock and then pinned into place.

I reccommend doing this with dry hair as wet hair can and will become stiff.

Also, to my knowledge, you won't be able to use any hair products out side of shampoo and conditioner. However, bobby pins are in regulation, as well as the metal clips, and so are the flat old-school barrettes- the ones that are solid black or the tortise shell ones.

Considering your ethnicity, just get everything in black and you'll be just fine. And good luck!!!!

**In boot camp, you aren't allowed any styling products- but once out you are. And Muted is right about the pins showing- which is why they need to be as close to your hair color as possible. They can forgive a stray bobby pin after a 10 hour day- but not if it's black on a pretty blonde head!! ;)**

I was in the Marine Corps for 5 years and had long hair. We were not allowed to have any hair ornaments, bobby pins, SHOWING in our hair nor were we allowed to wear any styling products (no gel, no hairspray). So I always French Braided my hair and used water to tame the flyaways.

Basically, we had to put up our hair so that it looked like it was being held up by 'invisible' forces, LOL.

Yes, you will have to be able to put your hair up in a matter of minutes/seconds, so I would start practicing now so that you have it down when you get to training.

Kudos to you for enlisting in the Air Force! That is so admirable, especially considering the current conditions. I hope you do not get sent over to the battle.
